Three Provincial teams are heading to Baseball Canada National Championships this weekend to represent Prince Edward Island.

The Provincial 13U team is heading to Repentigny, QC to take part in the 2019 Baseball Canada National 13U Championships from 22 – 25 August. This team, made up of fifteen of the top players participating in the Baseball PEI 13U “AAA” category, are led by the same coaching staff as in 2018 – Bob Doyle, Jason Doyle, Dave Benton and Patrick Young (with Jeff Young as chef-de-mission). Bob Doyle, who has coached countless teams at National Championships – including Canada Cup and Canada Games – brings a large amount of knowledge and experience to this group, and is well supported by his assistant coaches. This team has played approximately 15 games this summer in preparation for the Nationals (including winning the Fredericton Invitational 13U tournament) and has a few players who also played at last year’s National 13U Championships. They head into the National Championships with confidence and are looking to win several games.

Led by head coach Rob McCormack and assistants Blair Creelman, Joe McInnis and Matt Barlow, the Provincial 15U team is also a quietly confident bunch heading to the Ray Carter Cup (Baseball Canada National 15U Championships) in Oshawa, ON from 22 – 25 August. The Provincial 15Us have a strong squad that accumulated an impressive 6-4 record in the ultra-competitive Baseball PEI 18U “AA” league, only allowing 35 runs in the process. On top of that, they have played several exhibition games against the Provincial 15U teams from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and had success against these clubs as well. While they can hit, the key to the Provincial 15Us success has been strong pitching – including throwing a lot of strikes – and very tight defence. This formula should work very well at the Ray Carter Cup.

While the average age of this squad is 14-years-old, the Provincial 16U Girls team is looking to surprise some people and do damage at the 2019 Baseball Canada National 16U Girls Championship in Bedford, NS from 22 – 25 August. Made up of girls from across the Island playing at various levels, this group of seventeen players has practised every week since the end of April and has played a few exhibition games versus the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick 16U Girls teams and the Summerside 13U “AA”s.  Headed by a coaching staff of Randy Byrne, Mackenzie Pinet, Tyler Johnston and Dave Atkins (with Tessa Hood as the team’s trainer), this team will play hard-nosed and smart baseball. The future is exciting for this group too – all players are eligible to return in 2020 when the Baseball Canada National 16U Girls Championships take place in Summerside, PE.
