Two teams are representing Baseball PEI at the 2019 Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships in Summerside, PE – the Provincial Champion (and host) Summerside Chevys and the runner-up Cardigan Clippers.

These are two very intriguing teams at the Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships. Summerside started the season in the Baseball PEI 18U “AA” League poorly, going 2-6 in their first eight games. However, they turned things around in the second half of the season, going 5-1 in their final six regular-season games for an overall record of 7-7, good for third place in the five-team Baseball PEI 18U “AA” category. Their strong finish was no surprise, as their roster is full of talented and experienced players, such as Ben MacDougall, Duncan Picketts and Dylan McCormack. At the 2019 Baseball PEI Provincial 18U “AA” Championships at Church Field, Morell, they went a perfect 4-0 to win the J. Vernon Handrahan Trophy as Provincial 18U “AA” Champion. For the Baseball Atlantic Championships, they have picked up two Charlottetown 18U “AA” Islanders players – Tanner MacLean and Noah Duckworth – who will both provide some bona fide pitching. Led by coaches Tammy Gallant and Dale MacDougall, the Chevys have come on hot at the right time of the year (and are looking to win the Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championship after winning it in 2017).

The Cardigan Clippers are the defending Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Champions, having won the event last year in Corner Brook, NL. Despite having some players back from the 2018 win – particularly Joel MacEachern, Jake MacLaren, Jack MacKenzie – there was a turnover of players and coaches (with Evan Myers and Mitch Ryan now coaching the team) making this season more challenging than in 2018. Despite this, the Clippers finished the Baseball PEI 18U “AA” season with a record of 8-6. Good for second place in the five-team league. At the Provincial 18U “AA” Championships, they finished the round-robin tied with Charlottetown with a 2-2 record. As such, Cardigan and Charlottetown – who finished in first place in the Baseball PEI 18U “AA” League with a 13-1 record – played a one-game playoff on Sunday, 25 August to determine who would be the second PEI team at the Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships, with Cardigan coming out on top, winning 9-7. For the Baseball Atlantic Championships, the Clippers picked-up Tyler Taylor from the Stratford Athletics for effective left-handed pitching and Chase Gaudette from the Western Mariners, who will provide the ability to get on base and speed in the outfield.

These two Island teams will take on the Hants North Jays (Nova Scotia), Corner Brook Barons (NL) and Fredericton Royals (New Brunswick). Hants North and Corner Brook also took part in the 2018 Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships.

Good luck to both the Summerside Chevys and Cardigan Clippers!
