For the third year in a row, a team from Prince Edward Island has won the Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships. For the second time in three years, that team was the Summerside Chevys. For the 2019 version of those Championships, an Island team also won silver (Cardigan Clippers – the 2018 Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships). What a weekend for 18U baseball on PEI.
This past weekend (30 August – 1 September) the 2019 Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships took place in Summerside, PE. After a slight delay due to rain the day before, the Championship got started Friday morning at Legends Field. Over two days, Summerside, Cardigan, Hants North (NS), Fredericton (NB) and Corner Brook (NL) battled for the Atlantic crown. At the end of Saturday, the Chevys had a 4-0 record. Three teams were tied at 2-2, and from the Baseball Atlantic tie-breaking procedure, the Cardigan Clippers ended up finishing second as they had the best defensive runs per inning ratio of the three teams tied.
On Sunday morning, the two Island teams met in the final, with Summerside defeating Cardigan 5-0. This capped off an amazing run for Summerside, who went 14-1 in their last 15 games to capture a Baseball PEI Provincial 18U “AA” Championships and a Baseball Atlantic Championship. Summerside’s Ben MacDougall was named tournament MVP, Cardigan’s Tyler Taylor was named Top Pitcher, and Summerside’s Noah Duckworth was the Top Hitter of the tournament.
