When the quarantine measures from the COVID-19 pandemic lift and we are allowed to hit the field, in light of the current situation involving the cancellation of National Championships in 2020, Baseball PEI will be making some changes to our Provincial team programs.
When we are permitted to hit the field, the Provincial 13U, 15U, 16U Girls and Youth Selects/Canada Games programs will be running training team programs for the rest of the summer and into the fall. This will include training/practices and potentially some exhibition games (depending on what is permitted by the CPHO). When the weather gets too inclement for baseball, these programs will be going indoors over the winter of 2020/2021 approximately once every one-two weeks. Then, when the snow melts and these programs can get onto the field in the spring of 2021, these programs will be holding tryouts for their 2021 teams, representing Baseball PEI at the 2021 Baseball Canada National Championships.
As such, the age groups for these training team programs are changing. Whenever we are permitted to get onto the field, the 2020 Provincial 13U training team program will be eligible for any players who turn 11- and 12-years-old in 2020 – 12- and 13-years-old in 2021 – and who are interested in trying out for the 2021 Provincial 13U team. The 2020 Provincial 15U training team program will be eligible for any players who turn 13- and 14-years-old in 2020 – 14- and 15-years-old in 2021 – and who are interested in trying out for the 2021 Provincial 15U team. The 2020 Provincial 16U Girls training team program will be eligible for any female players who turn between 11- and 16-years-old in 2020 – between 12- and 17-years-old in 2021 – and who are interested in trying out for the 2021 Provincial 16U Girls team (please note that the 2021 Provincial 16U Girls team is permitted to take only three 17-year-old players). Finally, the 2020 Canada Games training team program will be eligible for any players who turn 15-, 16- and 17-years-old in 2020 – 16-, 17- and 18-years-old in 2021 – and who are interested in trying out for the 2021 Canada Games baseball team (please note that the 2021 Canada Games team is only permitted three 18-year-old players on their roster).
These changes in age for our Provincial teams in 2020 is to ensure that eligible players for these teams in 2021 are playing/training with the coaching staffs that will oversee these teams in 2021. Also, Baseball PEI is looking to take advantage of a difficult situation and give these players, starting as soon as possible, the best training and preparation for the 2021 season and at the 2021 National Championships.

At this time, we are unable to give any information on specific times, costs, et cetera. However, when this information is determined, it will be posted on the Baseball PEI website, social media, and an email will be sent to anybody who is registered.
While we are disappointed that 2020 National Championships were cancelled, Baseball PEI understands the reasoning and is supportive of the cancellation. However, we are determined to take advantage of this and offer the ability for high-level training to as many players as possible, and in the process, hopefully, give us an advantage in preparation for 2021 National Championships.
