For 2020, Baseball PEI will be using different Provincial Championship formats than usual. Restrictions due to Covid-19 have changed the way these events will take place.
“In the past, for most Provincial Championships, you have one or two locations where a lot of games are played in over two or three days,” says Randy Byrne, executive director of Baseball PEI.
“Due to the maximum number of people permitted in an outdoor sporting gathering and other CPHO rules in regards to tournaments, that approach is not possible. So, we’ve changed how we are doing Provincial Championships this year. We will be going to a playoff-type format, which is a change for us and young players. However, we feel it is the best format to ensure a great experience for players and make sure we’ll abide by the CPHO guidelines.”
In terms of seeding at the majority of levels, there are differences based on the age, level and division. However, not all regular-season games will be used for seeding. Many teams use the first few games of the season to get more players in and try players out in different situations. Baseball PEI felt it would not be fair to use those games for seeding, as coaches may have approached those games differently if they had of know they’d be used for seeding at Provincial Championships.

Please note that this is subject to change, based on changes to CPHO rules/restrictions and if one or more teams choose not to enter Provincial Championships at a certain category.
