Summerside 15U "AA" Chevys News

The 2019 minor baseball season has ended with the completion of the final five Baseball Atlantic Championships and the Baseball Canada National 13U Atlantic Championship this past weekend.

In Dartmouth, NS, the Capital District Islanders lost 3-2 in the final – their only loss in the tournament – to the Yarmouth Gateways to claim the silver medal at the 2019 Baseball Canada National 13U Atlantic Championships. This capped off an impressive two-year run for Capital District at this event, after winning gold in 2018. Meanwhile, the Summerside Chevys went 3-0 in the round-robin but lost to Yarmouth in the semifinals and to the Dartmouth Arrows in the bronze medal game to finish fourth. Yasu Hojo of Capital District was awarded the top hitter of the tournament.

In Fredericton, NB, the Mid-Isle Cougars walked it off in the bottom of the eighth inning against Tri-County (NS) by a score of 5-4 to win the 2019 Baseball Atlantic 11U “AAA” Championships. Mid-Isle went 3-1 in the round-robin (with their only loss to the host Fredericton) and advanced to the final. The Atlantic crown at the 11U “AAA” division capped off a great season for this club, led by head coach Scott Ellsworth.

Here are how the other Island teams at other Baseball Atlantic Championships this past weekend faired:

  • 15U “AAA”: The Summerside Chevys went 2-2
  • 15U “AA”:  The Stratford Athletics went 1-3
  • 13U “AA”: The Western Mariners went 2-2
  • 11U “AA”: Both the Western Mariners and the host Sherwood/Parkdale Knights went 1-3

Combined with the gold and silver medals at the Baseball Atlantic 18U “AA” Championships in Summerside, PE on the Labour Day weekend, PEI teams won four medals at eight Atlantic Championships.

The PEI Youth Selects are on their way to Regina, SK for the 2019 BIGS Seeds Baseball Canada Cup, where they are looking to punch above their weight at Baseball Canada’s premiere event.

Lead by head coach Kevin MacLean and assistants Dale MacDougall and Alex Abbott, the Selects had a very good summer of play and development in the lead up to the Canada Cup. In the tough Kings County Baseball League, they finished with an exceptional 8-4 record. They also played very well in exhibition games and tournaments from May-August, including winning the Early Bird Tournament hosted by Baseball NS in May.

Led by overagers Ben MacDougall, Chase Gaudette and the likes of Jack MacKenzie and Duncan Picketts, the Youth Selects have steady pitching and good bats and look to put them on display in Regina.

Games start tomorrow (Wednesday, 7 August), with the Youth Selects taking on New Brunswick at 2 pm CST (5 pm ADT). The schedule and live results can be found at https://baseball.ca/?fd=champ&pg=schedule&evt=cup.

Best of luck to the PEI Youth Selects at the BIGS Seeds Baseball Canada Cup!
